Heirloom plants are described as “open-pollinated and grown in an earlier era.”  Some heirlooms are hundreds of years old, and others originated around the turn of the 20th century.  Since heirloom plants are not hybridized, they tend to be better tasting crops.

Purchase heirloom plants at Cleveland Metroparks “Farm & Garden Day” event on Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Garfield Park Nature Center in Garfield Park Reservation in Garfield Hts.

New this year, the Heirloom Plants, available for sale include: orange, yellow, red, and green peppers, blue and red kale, broccoli, beefsteak, cherry and celebrity tomatoes, red leaf and romaine lettuce, Swiss chard, white bok choy, red leaf and lavewa spinach, zucchini, yellow and spaghetti squash, cantaloupe, moon and star watermelon, and more.

Event-goers can enjoy live farms animals, including cattle and a petting area with horses, chickens, rabbits and goats.  Visitors can sample hand-churned butter and popcorn at the tasting-stations, participate in the egg and sack races, view farm equipment, and take the hay-wagon shuttles.  Kids can enjoy hands-on crafts, activities, games and jumping in huge mounds of straw and throwing fistfuls in the air!

Plus, local vendors and exhibitors will be on-site, including Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, Crystal Moon Acres, Garfield Heights Historical Society, Gaughn Bee Dancin’, Handrosh Farms, OSU Master Gardeners, and Spring Mist Farms.

“Farm & Garden Day” also features presentations and demonstrations:

  • Beekeeping Demonstration at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
  • Composting Presentation at 12:15 and 2:30 p.m.
  • Container Vegetable Gardening Presentation at 1 and 3:15 p.m.
